17 days Upper Mustang Trek Highlights
Overview
Upper Mustang is a remote cultural area that is located in the northern part of the Mustang district in Nepal. It has popularly been the 'Last Forbidden Kingdom' as it historically used to be closed, allowing entry just for foreign travelers in the year 1992. Most of this area has also been known to be unaffected by the modern world, preserving unique Tibetan culture, landscapes, and lifestyle.
Upper Mustang fell into the territory of Lo Manthang. The area is much augmented with Tibetan Buddhism and is flooded with monasteries, stupas, and other holy places. Significant religious and historical sites include the Lo Manthang Monastery and the Chhoser Cave. Upper Mustang has a very dry and severe climate with light rainfall and very cold winters. The country gets the rain shadow effect due to the high mountain ranges of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. The views are always of great drama: the evidence is desolate, windswept hills down to deep valleys, and possibly the most ancient of features, cave dwellings. Also, the landscape offers a view of both Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges.
The Upper Mustang trek is a long trek that takes 17 days, initially having to travel from Kathmandu through Pokhara to cover all that distance. From Pokhara, of course, you will have to travel by air to Jomsom for around 30 to 40 minutes. However, the views are incredible when you soar high through the Himalayas. Afterward, trek from Jomsom to Kagbeni via the Kali Gandaki Valley. Trek through wonderful landscapes and traditional villages until reaching Chele and continue with some spectacular views by a local monastery.
Upon reaching the alluring city of Lo-Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang, wander through the mystical ancient walled city and pay homage to significant monasteries, particularly the Namgyal Gompa. Continue walking; fly with dhakmar and visit Shyangbochen while savoring their unique floral and faunal dividends.
To return home, trek from Chhusang to Muktinath, a famous sacred pilgrimage site. Muktinath has wonderful temples as well as hot springs. Fly back to Pokhara having entered Jomsom earlier. Spend a day relaxing and exploring here before finishing your journey back to Kathmandu, where the group will have some last-minute sightseeing or shopping before their departure.
This trek has it all; adventure, culture, and stunning natural beauty that would create unforgettable memories in any of the most captivating regions of Nepal.

Upper Mustang Trek is generally rated as moderate in terms of difficulty level, but factors like fitness level, trekking experience, altitude acclimatization, and route can affect personal degrees of difficulty.
Good to Know
Why Upper Mustang Trek?
It is a trek that goes into the Upper Mustang Valley, which combines cultural richness, landscapes, adventure, and spiritual significance. Upper Mustang holds for you an unforgettable journey after which you will reminisce long: if you seek a trek with difficulty, a thorough plunge into Tibetan culture, or a view of pure natural beauty ever experienced. Upper Mustang Trek is one such new and exciting adventure destination for trekkers. Some of the most important reasons why this trek should be on the top list of every adventure and culture seeker are the following:
A Cultural Experience: Upper Mustang, also known as the "Last Forbidden Kingdom", was 1992 closed to foreign visitors, thus keeping the Tibetan culture intact. The trek will let you experience a culture that has remained almost untouched by modernity. The area consists of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, chortens (stupas), prayer flags, and a unique type of architecture that has maintained centuries-old traditions.
Fantastic Scenery: Compared to desolation and difficult terrain, the Upper Mustang would not be very different from the desert regarding an individual experiencing long stretches of vast, dry areas interspersed with deep canyons and strong cliffs. This starkness in the landscape challenges the imagination as not wholly beautiful as the colors of red and orange rock formations create a mood other than earthliness. The trek provides some spectacular views of both Annapurna and the Dhaulagiri mountain ranges.
Historical Importance: Mustang has a glorious history tightly linked with the ancient Tibetan kingdom. Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang, lies in an old palace, a sort of monastic structure some hundreds of years old. This region was much fruitful stopopper for trade between Nepal and Tibet.
Adventure with Accessibility: This trek is moderate to difficult and thus carries a lot of trekkers. This type of terrain now at an average altitude of above sea level from 2800 to 4000 meters requires acclimatization but is overall well accessible compared to other high-pass treks like Everest or Annapurna; it is low enough such that it is also easier for those wanting to avoid extreme altitude sickness.
Wildlife and nature: Various types of wild animals are found in the Upper Mustang, including the Himalayan blue sheep, snow leopards, and many species of birds. Unique flora and fauna contribute to this place's beauty inside the trek.
High-Heeled: With treks on typical Nepali regions of Upper Mustang, the serene quality is such that it doesn't get highly crowded, which is essential to a bit more authentic. The place is isolated and achieves what many trekkers require concerning solitude and peace without the hustle and bustle inherent in other, more crowded trekking trails.
Adventure Beyond the Trek: Pass through the various cultural sites into a high desert landscape of ancient caves and Tibetan small villages while straining your muscles going to Upper Mustang. Trekkers tend to go exploring old caves, including those famous sky caves in places like Charang and Tashi Kabum, which are said to be many thousands of years old.
History of Upper Mustang
Upper Mustang is popularly known for its mystical description as the "Last Forbidden Kingdom." It bears vast importance by being a strategic location as well as a cultural influence.
It was inhabited thousands of years ago, making it the focal point of the Kingdom of Lo, founded in 15 A.D. by King Ame Pal. Since then, it has grown into a flourishing trade area between Tibet and Nepal and has cherished culture with the fruitful flourishing of Tibetan Buddhism, playing a major role in its art and architecture.
Upper Mustang had fairly independent status throughout most of the 18th and 19th centuries, despite the influences of the Gorkha Kingdom and the British Empire. Its considerable isolation helped maintain that unique culture well into the mid-20th century. Since the abolition of the monarchy in 2008, Upper Mustang became part of the Mustang District of Nepal, which is now a restricted area for which special permits are required for visitors.
It is currently a trekker's and adventurer's delight to discover some of the most breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage while efforts continue to preserve its traditions and environment.
Best Seasons for Trekking in Upper Mustang
This is largely determined by the prevailing weather conditions and the trekking experience you are looking for when going to Upper Mustang including Muktinath. These are the favorable trekking seasons over this region:
Autumn (September to November): Autumn is probably one of the best times to trek in the Upper Mustang. The weather is fairly stable: usually, it features pretty clear skies, with moderate temperatures during the day and chilly nights, especially in the higher altitudes. This season boasts the greatest visibility of the impressive Himalayan peaks, such as Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, that make the most spectacular sights. Autumn is always high season among trekkers so, of course, you might be bumping into more fellow travelers along the trail, especially in the busiest places.
Spring (March to May): In spring, trekking is also among the best enjoys in Upper Mustang, as the winters start relenting, ridding the high majesty of rain. As the snow from winter melts away with the starting warmth of the season, luscious landscapes begin to form beneath layers of pink and white blossoms with greenery whiffed in during early spring at lower altitudes. At the same time, wildflowers bloom at quite peripheral lower altitudes as well. This also enhances the beauty of the trek. Otherwise, it is similar to autumn because visibility is so often good. So, a good time for photography.
Considerations for Other Seasons
Winter (December to February): Winter can indeed be very harsh in Upper Mustang. The cold is often accompanied by snow, especially at higher elevations. Some trekking routes can even be inaccessible because of snow, and several of the guesthouses closed down for this season. Received temperature falls below freezing and remains at that low for most of the winter season.
Monsoon (June to August): Rainfall occurs throughout many regions of Nepal during the monsoon season, but Upper Mustang is more rain-shadowed and thus receives lesser precipitation than most of the other places. The trails during this period can get pretty muddy and slippery, and the weather is unpredictable. Landslides are a common concern in certain areas during this season. It is a time with few trekkers; thus, it's an alternative for people who would prefer solitude but are okay with the frequent possibility of downpours.
Food, Water, and Accommodation in Upper Mustang
Food: Upper Mustang shows Tibetan culture very strongly on local dishes. Momo, Thukpa, Tibetan Bread, and Dal Bhat are common, and they have various Vegetarian- and vegan-based dishes. Food is generally made with locally sourced products such as vegetables, grains, and dairy. Fresh produce runs short on high altitude.
Water: Purchase bottled water in big towns like Jomsom and Lo-Manthang. But try not to throw in the trash plastics. Some of them might offer you tap water in guesthouses, but it's generally not recommended to drink it without purification. Refill your water bottles with treated water at guesthouses or from any other safe sources rather than using bottled water to keep you hydrated on your trek.
Accommodation: Houses and guestrooms are the most common hotels in Upper Mustang. These hotels usually offer simple, basic amenities like; shared and private room facilities, homestays, and common areas. Most guest houses even have hot showers, electricity, and Wi-Fi despite the basic housing.
