18 days Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Trek Highlights
Overview
Upper Mustang is widely regarded as a destination where the natural beauty becomes an experience of cultural and traditional values. The Tiji Festival is one of the significant festivals celebrated in Upper Mustang. The Tiji festival has many names; some call it Tiji, while others call it the Tiji Festival of Mustang. It is a providentially historical festival in terms of culture and is celebrated in The Upper Mustang of Nepal, particularly in Lo Manthang.
One of the most culturally rich places in Nepal, Upper Mustang becomes bright with the Tiji Festival, and the trek gives a whole new adventure to the traveler.
Starting in Kathmandu, travelers will travel through the picturesque Pokhara and fly to Jomsom before proceeding to trek into the Upper Mustang nestled between the mountains. Kagbeni is at the point where the trek starts with a romantic hike up an ancient monastery and still thriving settlements.
Trek through stunningly diverse landscapes- from arid desert-scapes to flowing lush green valleys-while enjoying the site of unique geological formations and vibrant colors that define Mustang. Lo Manthang is where trekkers arrive to participate in the annual Tiji Festival, during which one will be treated to three days of traditional masked dances, rituals, and collective effusion that celebrate the triumph of good over evil. This will be accompanied by monks engaging in elaborate dances that represent the legend of Dorje Jono, with local food and camaraderie.
Having had the rich cultural and spiritual experience of the festivities, trekkers will retrace their steps back to Jomsom and gloat about this enchanting landscape. The trip ends with a return to Pokhara and then Kathmandu for more exploration or departure.
This is a journey full of beautiful moments in nature and immersion into cultures, with the opportunity to witness an event of significance in a dismal yet amazing area of the world.
Tiji Festival
The Tiji Festival is an annual event celebrating life in Upper Mustang, Nepal. The dates usually fall in May over the three days of this festivity. It is celebrated among the communities with a long tradition in Tibetan Buddhism. Lo Manthang town, being the capital of Upper Mustang, carries great meanings about this festival. This festival known as Tiji commemorates a story that is in the legend of Dorje Jono, who is a young god that used to prevail against forces of evil that tried to bring an end to his mother and bring peace within the kingdom. This celebration is initiated by lengthy masked dancing done by monks dressed in brilliant colorful attires, reflecting the god's triumph over evil. These dances are also meaningful to others apart from being artistic; they invoke blessings over the community against harmful spirits.
One remarkable thing during the festival is that the place is filled with sounds of traditional music as hosts and guests gather to witness performances. The celebration is complemented by rituals through lamas and monks conducting prayers for health, wealth, and fortune. Other witnesses to the event such as families wear their traditional garbs, make and share very fine Fijian and Nepali dishes for the festive holidays, and take part in communal activities to enhance a sense of community culture and pride. The festival allows youth to benefit from traditions; they share stories from the past and take part in the activities.
Upper Mustang, with its unrivaled geological formations and views of the Himalayas, serves as a splendid backdrop for a festival-not for the locals or trekkers. A time celebrating the victory of good over evil, the Tiji Festival also reiterates at least three other essential compassion, community, and cultural continuity in this remote corner of Nepal. It is what makes it imperative for all to attend this happening from nowhere travel to visit and experience the mosaic of Mustangian heritage.

Good to Know
Why the Tiji Festival?
Cultural Heritage: The Tiji Festival celebrates the cultural and religious heritage of the Mustang region, which has an unparalleled culmination of Tibetan and Nepali influences. It reveals the customs, beliefs, and practices of the local inhabitants to conserve its heritage for future generations.
Legendary Import: The festival is based on the myth of Dorje Jono, a youthful god who was alleged to have fought against evil spirits to save his mother and would thus restore peace to the kingdom. The tale is emblematic of the triumph of good over evil and, thus, calls to mind compassion, virtue, and society.
Spiritual Renewal: A celebration and a time for spiritual reflection-renewal is what the Tiji Festival does; the blessings made through prayers, offerings, and rituals of the festival were believed to glorify the community as one for prosperity, health, and protection from evil forces.
Community Cohesion: The festival, thus, forms the fabric of the local community, and unites them in a common identity. Families and friends flock together to celebrate, share rituals, and relish traditional food and music, building social ties, and reinforcing cultural values.
Bright Cultural Expressions: The Tiji Festival is a spectacle of vibrant masked dances, music, and flamboyant costumes. The performances entertain but also relay tales about the culture and history of the place, providing rich artistic expression that neither alienates a local nor a visiting audience.
Tourism and Cultural Exchange: Indeed, the Tiji Festival brings people from around the globe to it, where it is possible for them to share cultural experiences with the local community. Tourists will learn more about their way of life from the country's traditions and even boost their local economies from the money they spend - thus aiding the sustainable development of the region.
Nature link: Spring is the time when the festivities are held, and the whole of nature undergoes renewal at that specific time. This point of attachment to the environment comes through the practices and celebrations themselves, showing the harmony between the community and the natural world.
Permits and Regulations
Permits for Trekking: If you wish to trek in Upper Mustang, you need two trekking permits:
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): This is for trekking in the Annapurna region.
Mustang Special Permit: This is also for Mustang region and it is issued by the Department of Immigration, Nepal. In general, it is costlier and requires a minimum group size of two.
Charges: The fees for these permits can always change; you need to check the latest fees and regulations before your trip.
Best Time for Tiji Festival
May would be the ideal season to attend the Tiji Festival in Upper Mustang since the weather is moderate, the cultural mood is active, and the landscape is beautifully enhanced by nature. If you are going to visit this festival, it is wise to make arrangements much earlier; many visitors throng this place during the festival, making it difficult to find a place to stay.

Food and Accommodations

Momo - Tibetan dumplings stuffed with meat or vegetable filling for a good snack or meal
Thukpa - Good noodle soup
Tibetan bread - Often eaten with meals
Chiya - Locally Spiced Nepali tea.
Accommodation: While trekking, the simple tea houses or guesthouses mostly provide simple shared rooms and common bathrooms run by local families. In Lo Manthang, the Upper Mustang capital, you can find lodges and guesthouses that are slightly better. However, for this short period during the Tiji Festival, it is very crowded as many visitors come to these accommodations, hence making pre-bookings necessary. Most teahouses provide common, basic amenities such as electricity, hot showers (except for some), and common facilities that provide a nice homely atmosphere for trekkers.
Strings of local guest houses offer every basic comfort while at the same time allowing the added benefit of engaging the local community in warm hospitality, thus enhancing one's experience in this culturally rich area.
