Overview
Namobuddha, located about 40 km from the southeastern part of Kathmandu, is seen in the pictures as a very quiet trail hike through foliage and traditional villages with a great view of the rest of the Himalayas. The trail leads to the holy Namobuddha Stupa, where, according to legends, Buddha made a great sacrifice. This peaceful journey is a blend of natural beauty, culture, and spiritual meaning: an ideal getaway from city life.
Namabuddha has been of great religious and historical significance for Buddhists. This has been heralded as the place where Siddhartha Gautama (later called Buddha) did an extraordinary act of compassion. According to the legend, Siddhartha was traveling with his companions and happened to find a starving tigress with her cubs. The tigress was too weak to hunt, and her cubs were going to die.
Siddhartha has great benevolence for the beings in that place and, seeing the tragic state of the tigress resolves to sacrifice himself for the feeding of the tigress and her cubs. This act of rodenticide is understood to be among the highest exhibits of Buddhist personality traits in terms of compassion and selflessness.
Namobuddha Stupa was built to honor this holy event on the site along with the monastery, adding to it as one of the holiest of the pilgrimage destinies for any Buddhist. It is the real pilgrimage destination given the value of aesthetic nature and extremely meaningful spiritual reflection of Buddhism in terms of values such as kindness, compassion, and interdependence of all beings.
Itinerary
The Namobuddha hiking trip starts with a lovely drive of 1.5 to 2 hours from Kathmandu to the trailhead. It's a beautiful country drive that takes the visitor away from the otherwise noisy escapade in the city. Enter and hike along dense forests, terraced fields, and small villages, gradually trailblazing upwards toward the Namobuddha Monastery. Enjoy natural beauty and quaintness all along the hike while absorbing panoramic views on clear days, stretching out to distant hills and the Himalayas. It is a hike to rejuvenate and a perfect atmosphere in which one can connect with nature and experience rural Nepalese life.
Exploring the Namobuddha Monastery is where you will end your journey. You will get to visit the sacred site believed to carry a great deal of spiritual significance for Buddhists. It is said that at this point, Prince Siddhartha Buddha was said to have offered his body to the starving tigress and her cubs. Once it has filled itself with the spiritual atmosphere and Buddhist rituals, go for a very quiet lunch either at a local restaurant or a picnic next to the stupa, gazing at the magnificent views. Then, you go back to your starting point and drive back to Kathmandu, thus ending a day full of wonderful hiking, culture, and spirituality.
